“Lost at the Fair”-
Gouache on paper
An illustration based on a vivid childhood memory of getting lost in a crowded handicraft fair. Seen from a child’s perspective, this piece explores vulnerability, fear, and the importance of awareness and emotional control.
Created for Project 4: Inner Child.
@emilycarrillustration
I was at a crowded handicraft fair with my mom, surrounded by bright colors, loud chatter, and constant movement. From my height, everything felt oversized—I remember mostly seeing people’s legs, swaying fabrics, and tables that felt far too tall.
When I spotted a pair of binoculars at a nearby stall, curiosity got the better of me. Looking through them, I noticed a familiar blue salwar and dupatta moving through the crowd. Thinking it was my mom, I followed along, imagining how funny it would be to sneak up and scare her. When I finally did, I looked up and realized it wasn’t her at all.
That moment changed everything. The excitement faded into fear as I understood I was alone. I tried to stay calm, remembering what my mom had taught me about stranger danger, even as panic slowly set in. After wandering for a while, I found myself near a fountain, unsure of what to do next. When a couple approached to help me, I was too scared to respond—until I heard my name announced over the speakers, calling me back to my mom.
We were reunited soon after, both shaken but safe. Looking back, this memory is a mix of fear, curiosity, and comfort. Through this piece, I wanted to gently revisit that moment while also sharing lessons about awareness, trust, and emotional control—especially from a child’s point of view.
Yayoi Kusama — Illustrated Biography (Spread)
Gouache on paper
A deeply personal visual narrative of Kusama’s childhood and becoming. This spread traces her early visual hallucinations, her mother’s disapproval, and the emotional weight of growing up in wartime Japan—experiences that profoundly shaped her inner world. Moving from fear and isolation to creation and resilience, the work shows how Kusama transformed her visions into art, culminating in her correspondence with Georgia O’Keeffe and the pivotal decision to move to New York.

This was Project 3 for ILUS 306 @emilycarrillustration , centered on the theme of biographies. Initially, I approached the project by attempting a more literal storytelling style focused on a narrative I wasn’t fully connected to. After my first critique, I chose to pivot completely and rethink the direction of the work.
I decided to focus on Yayoi Kusama’s early life, a chapter of her story that is far less documented despite her global recognition. Kusama has been a profound inspiration to me since I began learning about artists who challenged traditional norms and pushed the boundaries of what art could be. Through this piece, I wanted to highlight her formative years and the experiences that shaped her artistic voice, bringing attention to the origins of her practice rather than the icon she later became.

A reimagined book cover for the first novel in The Chronicles of Narnia. This piece was created for my second project of the semester under the theme Book Covers. Narnia has always been a deeply nostalgic world for me—one I keep returning to for comfort, imagination, and wonder.

Rapunzel’s Café : { Gouache on paper, 34x22 }
a fractured fairytale reimagined.
Through playful storytelling, this work explores the beauty and burden of turning passion into profession: procrastination, burnout, and financial stress woven into a familiar tale.
This was also my first project for ILUS306 this semester !! Now that I’m on winter break I will be updating this page with all the projects I’ve worked on these past few months ~phew~
It was a tough semester but we made it 🫠🤍

I changed my mind sooooo many times while painting this… documented this process because I tend to shy away from light effects in my paintings and wanted to see how I would progress!! Experimented with acrylic markers and ink
Anyhoo, if someone has tips on how to improve my light painting skills hmu 🥲🫶🏻

Starting a pocket sketchbook this summer !!

— this is my first comic book spread ever!! I had so much fun working on it. Only 6 of these pages took over 4 weeks of work and 57 pages of my hugeeee sketchbook. For this project we worked on the entire pre production of our story ( i.e character design, environment design, architecture, layouts, storyboarding, script writing all that fun stuff). Definitely kept me up at night but this project has inspired me to start working on my own graphic novel as an author/illustrator. Big projects up ahead 🤩🤩

DRAWING MARATHON 2025 ✍️✨
Just wrapped up an incredible 3-day Drawing Marathon at Emily Carr University—8-hour sessions of continuous, responsive drawing that pushed my limits in the best way possible. This is a yearly event, and I was fortunate enough to get accepted into this immersive program. Truly one of the most liberating experiences—losing yourself in a massive 6ft canvas, letting go, and just creating.
@emilycarru

I truly enjoyed this class, especially the way the projects were laid out and conducted. Filled me with so much inspiration and curiosity!! The transformative nature of creating art is fascinating and studying it helped me grow as an artist!!

The whole process of transformation in this project was so amazing to be part of. It all started with a simple geometric drawing of chairs and inflatable balls using charcoal. Then, things got interesting – we erased the original drawing and captured the setup from different angles, adding a grid to guide us. Next, we created maquettes and used acetate sheets to extract parts of them, which we projected and transformed into something totally different and unexpected. After that, we pulled out shapes and structures (organic or not) and made 10 variations from what we observed. Finally, after a few drafts, this is the piece I ended up with. Every step of the way was engaging and creative, and I loved it! Hope you did too.
